Fun & Funky!
Release: June 2020
For the second round of the Real Wine Club, we dove a little deeper into the slightly challenging side of natural wine. Some skin-contact white, a cider/wine hybrid, and some lesser known, but clearly delicious varietals, like Blaufränkisch! Easing you into these perhaps unfamiliar bottles and showing you that there is always something delicious to discover!
Covering, Italy, Spain, Austria, France and the mostly undiscovered Cowichan wine scene, we once again have a little bit of everything. Emandare starts us off with their funky “Grapple”, a one-off product that will never be made again! Then we slide to another little weirdo in the word of “orange wine”, a skin fermented and aged Parellada. Feral and expressive! Then to France for a not quite rosé not quite red. Domaine Ledogar making a super crushable drop no matter how you describe it out of old vine Carignan and Mourvèdre
Then we get into the reds. We kept it nice and tidy through these three, starting with Birgit Braunstein and her gorgeous little Blaufränkisch. A wonderful red similar to Pinot Noir in body, ample red fruit, and quite textural apart for a lighter red. Then, to northern Italy for Biodiversa by Monteversa. This guy is unusual only in the sense there is not a lot of Carmenére grown in Italy, and they nailed this one, with a little splash of Merlot. Rounded and easy drinking so get those Pizza orders in. Lastly, from Valencia, Pago Casa Gran Casa Benasal Elegant. Extraordinary value red that punches way above it's price point and even got a nod of approval from a famous wine writer… Fancy.. Garnacha Tintorera, with some Syrah and Mourvèdre that will make anyone happy.
